Shotguns

We recommend that you bring a pump-action or semi-automatic shotgun. Recommended pump shotguns include the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870. Recommended semi-automatic shotguns include the Beretta 1301 and the Benelli M4. If you choose to bring a NFA item such as a short-barrel shotgun, please bring a tax stamp and any other required documentation.

Sighting Systems

Shotguns are simple, violent weapons. A simple bead sight is sufficient for most people’s needs. For a larger bead front sight, we recommend the XS Sights Big Dot Shotgun Bead Sight.

Some people may find that a simple red dot such as a Holosun 407C or 507C can also be useful on their shotgun. Keep in mind that anything you bolt on to your shotgun must withstand the violence of the recoil.

Slings

“A sling is to a long gun what a holster is to a handgun.” A sling allows you to secure your long gun on you, leaving your hands free to do things. We recommend two-point slings on your long guns. Single point slings tend to swing in front of you and tend to hit you in the legs and groin, getting in your way.

We recommend slings on your long gun in training or for duty use, but we do not recommend a sling on a gun that is staged for home defense as it will catch things as you navigate your home. You can use products such as ranger bands and the NeoMag Sentry Strap to secure your sling when it’s not in use. We recommend slings from Magpul, Blue Force Gear, Viking Tactics and Pew Pew Tactical.

Receiver mounted side saddle

Shotguns are hungry and they must be fed a lot. We recommend a receiver-mounted side saddle to carry spare shells on your shotgun. Most screw-on plastic side saddles rattle off due to the violence of the recoil in a shotgun. One plastic side saddle we can recommend is the Aridus Industries Quick-Detach Carrier.

We most recommend attaching soft loop velcro to the receiver of your shotgun and using elastic, velcro-backed side saddle “cards” from DSA Arms. A belt-mounted shell carrier or dump pouch would also be very useful for carrying spare ammunition.
